Very nice review! I do agree with you when you say Linux Mint is one of the prettiest linux distribution ever released. I’m using it since Bea version and it’s really easy to see how many improvements and efforts the developers had put into it! Simply lovely and efficient!

nice review. i am using it right now, its really cool. its ubuntu based and everything work out of the box with nice visuals and better default apps like amarok, beryl and pidgin instead of gaim.

I am using LinuxMint 3.0 since Beta 014 for my brand new Asus G1 Laptop. It is perfect after installation. The live mode could be faster, but who cares? A little advice: You should look at mintinstall, too.

I too found the distro very elegent,..but after using Beryl a few times,..next timeI re-booted items icons and shortcuts had all just disappeared of the taskbar. Even the lower left task button to the menus vanished

Nice review and straight to point. One thing I would like to say. Any UNIX/Linux distro can give you the funny and not-so-funny quotes. The secret is an old UNIX application called ‘fortune’. You need to add a line in your .profile or .bash_profile (depending on your shell) to invoke it automagically, as in your screeshots.

I’ve used Ubuntu since its inception, and now using 7.04. But, I decided to give Linux Mint 3.0 a try. Unfortunately, I can’t get it to run on the two systems I use for Ubuntu - an old IBM ThinkPad 600X notebook with a 500MHz P3 and 576MB RAM, and a 2.8Gz P4 Intel Desktop board-based tower with 1GB RAM. In each case, Mint hangs during install. I find it very strange that I’ve never had any problems with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubuntu on either of these systems, but Linux Mint will not run.

Today I downloaded Linux Mint Lite 3.0 — burned to a disk and reboot had nothing but problems. Linux Mint for one takes for ever to load on my AMD X2 64 Dual Core 3800+ using DDR2 1 gig RAM. Second, everytime I manage to get to the login menu, heres the fun begins.

Linux Mint, for me that is, goes into a endless loop trying to login and the system says incorect password. Screen resets and tries again. I tossed the CD and tried another brand CD and the same thing happens.

Even downloaded the full version 3.0 and the same thing happens. Talked with others about this issue and gota a big question mark?????

The earlyer versions of Mint load on off the live CD just fine and install great. For me, very disapointed in 3.0.

I’ll stick with my earlyer version of Linux Mint.

I have tried Mint 3.0 on several machines now, and it’s a mixed bag. Seems to be a bit too much for my Fujitsu Lifebook P2040 with 256MB RAM, and Transmeta Crusoe 850 CPU (leaves only 240 MB of RAM after setting aside 16MB for its “code morphing”).

I suspect Beryl and Beagle indexing are just a bit too much on RAM and CPU cycles. And it cannot quite get the DVD player working with either gxine or mplayer (gxine validation checking says MTRR support is missing - not sure what that does, but it seems to be significant), whereas the latest Puppy linux plays DVD’s just fine.

And now they are offering a “light” version that does away with the only distinguishing features, the “illicit” codec support, but not the “pig” features. What’s the point of that? I might as well go with the base Ubuntu and Automatix, and tweak that to what I need for “weaker” PC support. How about leaving the codecs in place and getting IceWM or XFCE working with it for true “lightness” (including option to disable Beagle)?

I just installed it on an Athlon 1 Ghz desktop with 1 GB of RAM, to see how that plays out for an upgrade from Edubuntu 6.06 for my teacher wife’s use - hoping non-light and Beryl/Beagle play nice there.
