You have stated that the hibernate function works fine during your test. Could we state that Ubuntu is the best distro you have reviewed suporting ACPI. Did both suspend to RAM and disk function well?

Suggestions for review: Zenwalk and elive are also well known distros feturing light weight desktops suitable for rather older notebooks for desktop usages.

Nice review! I use Ubuntu since version 5.04 (Hoary) and I simply love it because of how easy all the things work, and it is getting better each release. Feisty is not diferent because of all the improvements that were done by Ubuntu developers. I´m eager to see the wonders to come with Guty Gibon next October. Maybe there will be imoprovements concerning to the artwork and look and feel, something I really would like to see implemented. Let´s wait and see, because the new feature Click ´n´run seens to be very interesting and useful!

You mentioned the alternate Cd, that is for older PC’s with less than 192mb of RAM, as the live Cd is unlikely to load on these machines.

I have to agree with the review of Ubuntu (Kubuntu). I enjoy it on an older Dell system and it works great. The only problem I had was getting Java and Flash to work, but after searching through their community forums I found the fix and got it running in no time. I also have used the Live CD version on my Dell Laptop and it works great, boots fast and everything works right out of the box. Again thanks for the great review, and I feel with Dell getting into the Linux action we will see a lager number of people ditching Windows. Now if there was just a version of World or Warcraft (or other killer application) that worked in Linux with out Wine, then I feel we will see an explosion of Linux users.

May I ask you how singing of encomiums serve useful purpose for linux? Moreover, I do not consider myself as a fanboy. That is a thing that is most annoying in some linux communities (e.g. Ubuntu and PCLOS). And that exactly was may point - I am fed with sweet flattering Ubuntu (or any other distro if you like) reviews, without substance and justified criticism.

From where I am sitting that’s the beauty of this whole thing. You actually have a choice.

Don’t like Ubuntu/RedHat/Mandrive/Slackware. Well shop around and find one that does work for you. Even the autohr of the post has moved onto Mint.

For the record the three machines on the desk in front of me run Windows, Ubuntu, Slackware, Redhat(Old) and Centos. In various combinations. ALl of them get used over the space of a month and all of them have roles to play.

Sorry, I didn’t get it. I did not want to discuss pros and cons of Ubuntu - let us assume that this depends on different preferences many people may happen to have. This was the review which seemed to me rather pointless and void of substance. If such a review is written on the next day when the new version of Ubuntu is out, then may be it has a point. But now when you have red about 10 similar reviews you just cannot see the point if writing such a piece. In short, this review adds nothing to those already written and that is boring.

I generally like Ubuntu. However, the upgrade, from Edgy to Feisty caused suspend/resume to fail. This is a big issue for laptop users and as such had to back down to Edgy.

Nice review. Very positive and informative. I have installed Feisty Fawn on 8 different machines now. It is, so far, the single best distro that I have ever had the pleasure of installing.

In many cases, Beryl (and other accelerated window managers) require these ‘Restricted’ Drivers in order to function. This is the case for most (all?) Nvidia cards and the more recent Ati cards.

Pretty much the standard review for Ubuntu. I’ve been using Linux since Mandrake (remember?) 7.1 was given to me. I’ve used about every distro there is. You know “gotta’ try this….now!”

But, the best compliment I can give Ubuntu and one I don’t see enough of, is that it is easy for newbies to start right off with. My wife and 3 daughters have been using Linux mostly in the form of SUSE, PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu. They love Ubuntu and now so does my 72 yo mother! They can’t believe they don’t have to run Norton and scan for crapware every night while they sleep! The kids love the simple games. My wife loves Open Office and the ability to send files to MS users who have no idea what she’s using. Let’s face it, people use computers mostly for web browsing, email, audio/video. Hard core gamers are a different category IMO. Linux (especially Ubuntu) does all this fine. My kids use their iPods on the Linux box. No problems. Ripping DVD’s? No prob. Amarok is in many ways better than iTunes and I use my G5 Mac 90% of the time!

I have set up Ubuntu for elderly folks who believe their computers are “dead”. I tell them it’s Windows and ask them to try Ubuntu. For their needs, it works and the learning curve is minimal. Months later they are amazed that their computers still “work like new!”.

Seriously, spending hundreds of $$ on one of the many version of Vista is plain silly now. The time is here people. Linux, like OSX just works! I’ll never go back and am converting others along the way! It’s fun and making Bill and Steve sweat at night makes it even better!

considering the effort, it’s quite good. but personally, i like ubuntu. infact, i’ve been using it since breezy badger days. i’ve seen a lot of flaws though. updates and upgrades did a great deal. until i ended up here in feisty fawn. one thing i noticed about this latest version is that it fails to finish the whole installation. i used both the live cd and alternate cd. they both failed. it must be a RAM issue. my machine has 256 Mb RAM. i pulled out another ram from my other machine and added it to the machine subject for feisty installation. NO SWEAT!!! i completed the fresh feisty install. so why ubuntu claims the least requirement is 256 Mb RAM for installation? 256 Mb RAM can handle running feisty, but not in the installation of feisty. it requires more than that. that’s what i found throughout the installation process in my hp dx2000 computer. im now making this comment here in feisty with only 256 Mb RAM.

Great review! But i like PCLinuxOS 2007 for its better multimedia capacity, easy configurability and better stability.
